What You Need to Know About RV Safety Chains
Whenever you're towing something with your RV, safety chains are an absolute must. There needs to be a strong link between your RV and the load, and your trailer hitch shouldn't be the only connection. A single point of failure means that there's a lot that could go wrong, especially if you're on the highway going 60MPH.
If you don't have safety chains for your RV, you should absolutely pick up a set. They could save your stuff, or even save
lives, for a very low cost.
The Importance of RV Safety Chains
There's nothing particularly special about the safety chains themselves. They're just large heavy metal box chains, intended to provide a backup connection between your RV and the trailer/load being towed, in case your trailer hitch fails.
For best results, the chains should be crossed beneath the tongue of the trailer and connect to the hitch as well as the two objects.
In some cases, they could be useful for direct towing. For example, should you ever be in an emergency where you need to tow a car behind your RV without a flat trailer for it to ride on, you'll need those chains to make the connection.
In some states, RV safety chains are even a legal requirement, which you should keep in mind for cross-country drives. But in any case, using them is always a good idea.
What To Look for In RV Safety Chains
Whenever you're using RV safety chains, you should have two in place - one on each side of the object being towed. That way, the load will remain directly behind you if the hitch fails, and without "skiing" back and forth as you make turns.
Safety chains are typically sold in three classes, based on how many pounds they can be expected to hold. These are:
- Class 1: 2,000 pounds
- Class 2: 3,5000 pounds
- Class 3: 5,000 pounds
Generally speaking, there's no harm in using heavier chains on lighter loads, so you probably want to pick up Class 2 or 3 chains, unless you know you'll only ever tow light loads.
